Martellus Bennett has some NSFW words for Jimmy Garoppolo

Tight end for former New England Patriots, Martellus Bennett gives the scoop on why the Patriots could potentially swap away for Jimmy Garoppolo.

For the famous New England Patriots, there isn’t a lot of drama emerging from their locker room mid-season. In the years since, those tumultuous situations and agonizing feelings came to light, as did the whole fallout that fueled Tom Brady’s departure from Foxboro.

But sometimes the stories that come out of a New England basement are funny, like the infamous 2000s prank war. Or, if you’re anyone other than Jimmy Garoppolo, the reason Martellus Bennett gave Garoppolo a last-minute seat in Week 4 of 2016.

This week, the former Patriots end made headlines for sharing his view on Garoppolo’s decision not to play through a shoulder injury in Week 4. Garoppolo suffered a shoulder sprain/AC in Week 2 which forced him out of the game early, but backed out from the starting party Immediately before launching in the fourth week.

Instead, third-series quarterback Jacobi Brissett climbed to the plate despite a thumb injury and endured a 16-0 closing loss to the Buffalo Bills. Bennett admired Brissett’s toughness, but not what he saw as Garoppolo’s weakness in pulling out.

“You can’t win with a quarterback,” Bennett said on the long-running double-coverage podcast hosted by Patriots Devin and Jason McCourty. All the McCurry twins could do while Bennett yelled about Garoppolo was laughing and shaking their heads, an indication that Bennett wasn’t necessarily alone in his opinion.

Martellus Bennet and Jimmy Garoppolo: Did the 49ers lose to the Patriots?

Bennett’s view on Garoppolo is particularly interesting, given the quarterback’s unique history between the Patriots and the 49ers. Garoppolo, who struggled with injury again in 2021, makes what Bennett says is an ongoing problem. While his fellow Patriots may have lost respect for Garoppolo’s lack of “mental toughness”, Garoppolo has become a problem for the 49ers as he struggles to stay healthy.

After sitting for three years behind former New England Patriots Tom Brady, Garoppolo was reluctantly traded to the 49ers by Patriots coach Bill Belichick. Belichick, who saw Garoppolo as the future of the Patriots franchise, shipped it to San Francisco in 2017 and kept Brady instead.

It was a move that worked best for the Patriots, as Brady went on to win the team’s Super Bowl VI title in 2018 before leaving to improve the situation in Tampa Bay. Now, the Patriots are led by rookie Mac Jones, who is rumored to be the rookie quarterback Kyle Shanahan who has wanted him all along.

The 49 players have seen their share of success since landing at Garoppolo, such as a thrilling Super Bowl appearance after the 2019 season, however, Garoppolo didn’t prove to be the dependable quarterback Shanahan had hoped for, which is why he traded the 49 players for the costly Lance. With general check number 3.

If it had come to Bennett in San Francisco, Jimmy J might have been passed over a long time ago.
